Notes on negotiating rates for
Photography / National newspapers

These are some things to remember when negotiating rates for photography for national newspapers. And please send us your accounts of successful negotiations.

  • The rates suggested are for limited licences: each extra use of any photo licensed attracts an extra fee;
  • The suggested rates are minima from which freelances negotiate upward according to the value of the work; and
  • Tabloid papers will pay at least double the suggested rates - and much, much more for some exclusive pictures.
  • Freelances who are registered for VAT will add it to every invoice.

These rates are not recommendations: they are based on the least unreasonable going rates.
