These are some things to remember when negotiating rates for photography for use online. And please send us your accounts of successful negotiations.
- The rates suggested for copyright work are for limited licences: each extra use licensed attracts an extra fee.
- In particular, it is essential that both sides are clear about what uses are licensed. Website people who come from the computer programming world, rather than publishing, may believe that they own a work outright once they've paid any money for it - because that is, unfortunately, what often happens to computer programs. Use of a photo on a different website - including a website owned by the same company - attracts an additional fee.
- The suggested rates are minima from which freelances negotiate upward according to the value of the work; and
- Freelances who are registered for VAT will add it to every invoice.
