For those in peril...

LONDON FREELANCE branch has joined international protests over the killing of Italian journalist Rafaele Ciriello in Palestine on 13 March. The Palestinian Centre for the Protection of Human Rights reports that "he was hit in the chest and abdomen and left bleeding for 30 minutes. Israeli troops refrained from rescuing him and banned ambulances from evacuating him. Palestinians from Kadura refugee camp risked their lives and carried the wounded journalist to the Arab Care Hospital in Ramallah where he passed away."

See the Branch letter to the Israeli Ambassador and the International Federation of Journalists' website Camera-man Carlos Handal and Boston Globe reporter Anthony Shadid were shot and wounded on 7 April and many others have been shot at.

As the Freelance went to press, at least one person reporting for the alternative news service Indymedia was trapped in the Occupied West Bank. Camilla Butterley from Manchester was last heard of inside President Arafat's compound. Since the Israeli military has prevented "official" journalists from working in much of the West Bank, is better-informed about events there than most.
