Newcastle upon strike

AS THE Freelance went to press, journalists at the Newcastle Chronicle and Journal were striking on two days a week over pay. Their slogan was "Pooey to two per cent" - hence the small t-shirt pictured above. That offer would have had graduate trainees starting on £12,250 a year. Remember, trainee managers for a certain purveyor of meat-like substances in buns get £17,500 from their first day.

The chapel would obviously appreciate it if any freelances asked to cover on strike days at these titles were unavailable. And the NUJ's National Executive has clarified the position of freelances who may suffer hardship while being unavailable - see here.
