More than 5500 Canadian media workers were locked out by CBC, the public service broadcaster, in an August dispute over casualisation and union rights. Newsworld, the main national evening news programme, consisted of one-minute Canadian news bulletins read by managers, then handed over to feeds from BBC World. The NUJ and sister union BECTU sent messages of support to the Canadian Media Guild and at the request of NUJ members working for the BBC in Canada and North America wrote to the BBC demanding urgent action to stop BBC material being used to fill news programmes on CBC. As always, we are entirely sure that Canadian Media Guild members would very much appreciate it if NUJ members asked to cover for the locked-out workers found themselves to be unavailable.
