Athenian amateur arrest aggro

A GREEK tourist who was up in court on harassment charges after being arrested for taking pictures on a Tube train found that the charges were dropped. Periklis Antoniou from Athens took a photo of the Jubilee Line carriage he was travelling in. The photo included, among other people, the 17-year-old daughter of another passenger, who objected, although Periklis insisted the passenger's daughter was incidental to the scene he photographed.

Nonetheless, Perikles was arrested under Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986, for causing &quo;public harassment, alarm or distress&quo;, and held overnight in a police station. When he showed up in court a month later, the case was thrown out for lack of evidence, after the Crown Prosecution Service decided, apparently on the same day, not to proceed. The costs to the public in bringing Periklis over for trial were considerable.

Amateur Photographer has the story in more detail.
