Journalists at risk: part of the job?

The European Federation of Journalists - of which the UK National Union of Journalists - is pleased that the Council of Europe is taking press freedom very seriously (May Freelance). The Council - not to be confused with the European Union - is the body that convenes the European Court of Human Rights. It is now inviting journalists to take part in a survey on how freedom of expression issues affect you, and how you have been pressured, from subtle pushes to self-censor to death threats, as follows:

The Council of Europe is committed to promoting the safety of journalists. To throw more light on the issue, the Information Society Department together with the European Federation of Journalists, Index on Censorship, International News Safety Institute, Reporters without Borders and the Association of European Journalists, has launched a comprehensive quantitative study on unwarranted interference, fear of crime and self-censorship among journalists in Europe.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute your valuable insights and opinions to one of the most important topics facing the journalism community. Completion of the questionnaire is anonymous. You will not be asked for your name and your identity will not be disclosed at anytime. You retain the right to quit the questionnaire at any point. You may also choose to refrain from answering any particular question although there are a few compulsory items at the start of the questionnaire that will enable us to make comparisons between different types and groups of journalists.

The questionnaire may be accessed on the SurveyMonkey site and takes about 8 to 10 minutes to complete. It is available in other languages - if you have any difficulties with it please contact the Freelance editors who will pass your query on.

Please respond by 15 June 2016.
