Getting tested for covid-19
JOURNALISTS who are "covering coronavirus or providing public service broadcasting" are eligible to book themselves in for a virus test. Police guidance makes clear that "covering coronavirus" includes photographing or writing about impacts it may have.
You should apply within the first 5 days of having symptoms. You can apply to go to a regional drive-through test site or for a home test kit. Home test kit availability will initially be limited but more will become available.
The tests on offer are for current, active infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid-19. Tests for antibodies - that your immune system would have produced if you had been infected in the past - are not yet available. Everyone hopes that a positive test for antibodies will correlate with you having immunity to the virus - though the World Health Organization has warned that "There is currently no evidence that people who have recovered from covid-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection.".
