Be safe, be trained...THE NUJ has agreed to sponsor two freelances for courses in surviving hostile environments -- one in September and one in October. The sponsorship is first come, first served. Even if you call late, the International Institute of News Safety is offering reduced rates for freelances. A week-long course for which employers pay over £1000 is available for £180 -- or, with a little help from your accountant, for just £135 net of tax. The courses consist of one day of introduction, covering health and safety legislation to civil disturbances -- and four days on "surviving hostile regions". Topics include "mortars and artillery", "not being seen" and -- in case you fail that bit -- "controlling bleeding". For details contact Don Macglew at Head Office. |
