Shifting that rate

How do we sub-editors get rate rises?

A lot of it's to do with just asking. I've very rarely had a request for a higher rate turned down.

In fact, I recently did, stuck (politely) to my guns, and got a call a week later to book me at the higher rate.

Be brave and ask. I do understand what happens when you need to pay the bills though, and I don't berate anyone for accepting a lower rate - they know their circumstances better than I do...
