Back from the brink
An online salon event about nuclear risks and their relevance in today’s world
LONDON FREELANCE Branch presents an online salon event about nuclear risks and their relevance in today’s world. It's on Wednesday 15 February 2023 from 7pm to 9pm.

Nuclear war is just one miscalculation away. Vladimir Putin has been read as threatening nuclear war - and other leaders are testing their nuclear fire power. The recent failure of this summer's Non-Proliferation Review conference adds more gloom to the mix.
But it doesn't have to be like this. No state supports the idea of "deterrence" as the only restraint on chemical weapons or biological weapons or cluster munitions - because we have banned these dangerous weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and consigned them to a dark past. Nuclear weapons have not yet been banned: but there are paths to get there. The NUJ has passed motions in support of disarmament (in 2021, 2018 and 2016).
Speakers at the salon will be:
- Milan Rai editor, Peace News
- Kyoko Gibson second-generation survivor of Hiroshima
- Dr Philip Webber chair, Scientists for Global Responsibility
- Elin Doyle playwright, comedian & author of Guinea Pigs
- Ben Donaldson head of campaigns at the UK United Nations Association
- Janet Fenton Women's International League for Peace and Freedom
The salon will be moderated by London Freelance Branch member Elizabeth Ingrams.
