Please consider standing for NUJ Councils
THE NATIONAL Union of Journalists is a member-led union. That means that its policies are decided by members - rather than by its staff. This happens at Delegate Meetings, every two years - and between these in the National Executive Council and bodies such as the Freelance Industrial Council (FIC), which sets policy relating to freelance members in England and Wales.
The Union has the following vacancies for which many London Freelance Branch members may be able to stand:
National Executive:
- Photographers;
- London area;
- South East England.
Members whose home addresses have London postcodes (starting with N, NW, E, EC, WC, SW or SE) can stand for the London seat; and those in the South-East outside that area for that seat. The photographers' seat is reserved for those who self-identify as photographers. To update your profile with NUJ HQ go to bit.ly/NUJprefs.
Freelance Industrial Council:
- East Anglia;
- London;
- South East.
The term "Industrial Council" appears to have originated with an amendment to the Union rule book to set up councils to represent the newspaper and broadcasting industries; then more amendments to create more constitutionally-similar councils.
Photographers’ Council:
- London.
For details of other vacancies, for example if you are one of those members who lives further afield, please contact the Secretary. If you are interested, tell the Secretary that you would like the Branch to nominate you, at either our June or July meeting. Only full members can be nominated.
If several are nominated for a seat, there will be an election.
