Sadly, it seems likely that more strike days will be required. Watch the NUJ HQ news page for updates.

Meanwhile, BBC journalists in Cairo were on strike on 14 June over an unfair payment policy, following the Egyptian pound falling from 22 to the pound sterling in October to 40 on 27 July.

BBC journalists voted to continue action. Talks continue.

And the NUJ will be at Broadcasting House to support Egyptian BBC colleagues on 30 August.

Solidarity with striking BBC journalists

JOURNALISTS in BBC Local TV, online and radio will strike again for 24 hours from 11am on 20 July in continuing resistance to drastic cuts to local radio.

Beldon Haigh perform Need My Local Radio at Broadcasting House on 7 June

This follows the pausing of action planned for 5 May as talks took place, brokered by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS). Affected members rejected the outcome. On 2 June they passed a vote of no confidence in senior BBC leadership.

NUJ members are working to rule - not doing any work that is not specified in their contracts - now. This is, they say, affecting programmes.

Watch for news of a separate dispute at Radio Foyle in Derry.

Freelances have no right to strike in UK law, but they may find themselves unavailable if offered shifts on days when NUJ members are on strike.

Any NUJ freelance who suffers a loss of income as a result of turning down shifts offered during a strike should contact the NUJ Chapel (workplace-based unit of NUJ organisation) for that media group.

Need My Local Radio

The NUJ is urging members to go to www.needmylocalradio.com and download a protest song by Beldon Haigh. It costs £1 and all profits generated from these downloads will be donated by Beldon Haigh to the National Federation of the Blind of the UK.
