US screenwriters reach provisional settlement
THE WRITERS Guild of America (WGA) came to a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on 26 September, ending 21 weeks of industrial action. As the Freelance went to press, union members were voting to ratify the proposed three-year contract which obtains concessions on payment, as well as streaming terms and the use of AI in screenwriting.
For the moment, the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) remains on strike but it is hoped that the WGA's settlement may speed up a resolution of this parallel dispute. The two unions organised joint picket lines over the summer, and WGA members have acknowledged the solidarity of SAG colleagues in advancing their cause within Hollywood.
In our last issue, London Freelance Branch member Mel Lambert, who works in the picture and sound editing industry on the US West Coast, observed how well supported the strike was by staff and freelance crews.
