Photographers, remember to claim!

PHOTOGRAPHERS: do remember to complete the second part of your claim for payment from the collecting society DACS by Friday 12 April. Go to payback.dacs.org.uk if you're already registered. If you are not registered, do it now at www.dacs.org.uk and to discover where the money comes from see www.londonfreelance.org/feesguide/GeRigCol.html

And DACS has commissioned an independent study of visual artists' earnings from CREATe, University of Glasgow: they want to hear from you about your earnings and how you generate income. Respondents will have the opportunity to enter a prize draw to win £500. Artists working across all mediums from animation, illustration and photography to installation, sculpture and performance, at all stages of their careers are encouraged to participate.

The survey is open until Sunday 7 April and will take around 15 minutes to complete. You will be asked to provide financial details for the tax year 2022-2023, so we recommend having this information to hand. All responses to the survey will be anonymous. The survey is here.

And for writers...

Statements setting out the equivalent payment to writers, from the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS), started arriving in mid-March.

Many report satisfying amounts, though some are disappointed: we are collating details.

Public Lending Right

Meanwhile the quite separate Public Lending Right payments – which compensate for the effects on the book market of your work being lent out – also came through in mid-March, despite the computer systems at the British Library (which now runs PLR) being attacked last year. For an explanation of how PLR works, see www.londonfreelance.org/feesguide/GeRigPub.html
