Lyra McKee remembered
BELFAST & DISTRICT Branch of the NUJ marked World Press Freedom Day 2025 on 3 May by unveiling a picture of Lyra McKee in the city's Reporters Bar, which opened in 2021 next to the old Belfast Telegraph building. Lyra McKee was shot on the night of 18 April 2019 while covering rioting in Derry, Northern Ireland. The New IRA admitted responsibility and apologised.

Hearings in the non-jury trial of those accused in connection with Lyra's killing resumed in March. Peter Cavanagh, Jordan Gareth Devine and Paul McIntyre are on trial for murder. Six others face charges including rioting and throwing petrol bombs. A hearing on 7 March heard that a further accused man, William Patrick Elliott, known as Billy Elliott, had died in England.
The case continues.
