Journalism and media openings in universities
THE BRANCH training gathering on Friday 25 June will be a second online workshop on journalism and media openings in universities with Sharon Wheeler, at 12 noon for one hour. We will email a Zoom invitation to Nranch members shortly beforehand.
The session will offer guidance on how freelance journalists can build a career teaching in universities, whether part-time, full-time, or alongside other media work. Sharon will cover topics including:
- Being a lecturer vs delivering one-off talks
- Teaching on BAs, MAs, NCTJ and BJTC courses
- Differences between Higher and Further Education
- Preparing, teaching, marking, and administering
- Opportunities in related fields as journalism courses close
- Routes to progression: research, committees, personal tutoring
- Should you do a Master’s or PhD—and do you need one to teach?
- Which union to join?
This practical and insightful session will be followed by time for Q&A and informal discussion. Whether you're already dipping a toe into teaching or just curious about the possibilities, this is a session not to miss.
