Israel, stop killing journalists

London Freelance Branch will hold a vigil for colleagues killed in Gaza on Wednesday 13 August at 10 Downing Street.

Please gather at 17:30 - initially in the protest area on Whitehall opposite the Downing Street gates (Open Street Map).

We are preparing cards remembering each of the 192 colleagues who are confirmed to have been killed in Gaza by Israeli military action.

We will read their names aloud.

It would therefore be excellent if there were 192 of us.

If you want to bring placards, we ask you that they bear only messages remembering our slain colleagues and demanding an end to the killing of journalists.

We will on Wednesday and in the coming days demand action from the UK government to:

  • ensure that surviving Palestinian journalists in Gaza, alongside the rest of the population, have immediate safe access to food, water and necessary equipment;
  • ensure that non-Palestinian journalists are able to enter Gaza to report alongside their Palestinian colleagues and that they are then able to report freely and independently and are not required to be “embedded” or otherwise under supervision; and
  • support an investigation by the International Criminal Court into the blatant targeting of journalists and media workers by Israeli forces; and ensure the passage of a UN binding Convention on the safety and independence of journalists and other media professionals.

For details of the latest killings see here.

London Freelance Branch condemns killings of journalists everywhere. Our memorial list includes journalists confirmed killed since 7 October 2023 in Gaza, Israel, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria and Iran.
