Don’t let your membership go
WHEN TIMES are hard it may be tempting to “save” on your union membership – though those are the times when you are most likely to need it.
So, don’t.
Under NUJ rules, “no member shall be required to pay contributions of more than one per cent of their taxable income.” Contact membership@nuj.org.uk – you will need to give evidence such as a tax return.
And if your income from journalism dries up completely – for example due to illness or caring responsibilities – you can suspend your membership. This can avoid a re-admission fee later.
You should apply for the one per cent rule reduction by 31 March each year. It accepted, it the reduction will apply from the May subscription payment. If you apply later, the reduced rate will apply only from the date your evidence is received. Reductions cannot be backdated.
The Membership Department asks that you include your membership number in all communication with it.
