‘A huge duty to perform’

GAZAN Al Jazeera bureau chief Wael Dahdouh recorded a message for our 27 August vigil. Al Jazeera reported on 25 October 2023 that his family were killed in an Israeli air raid. He was live on air when he learned that his wife, son, daughter and grandson were dead. He returned to work the next day. His remaining son, Hamza, also a journalist, was killed in an Israeli attack on the car he was travelling in with two other journalists on 7 January 2024.

May the peace, blessings, and mercy of God be upon you. First of all, I extend my greetings and appreciation to each and every one of you, each by name, title, position, and role.

Also, secondly, on this day, on this occasion, after all that has happened to your fellow journalists in the Gaza Strip and to civilians, including displacement, famine, genocide, destruction and siege, it is mandatory to address you with this appeal and say: Appeal, appeal, appeal.

We address your conscience, your morals, your humanity, and the codes of honour to which you have committed, to do everything you can for your colleagues in Gaza Strip, for humanity in the Gaza Strip, to end famine in the Gaza Strip, to end genocide in the Gaza Strip.

The British government, the Prime Minister's office, the British Parliament, the elites and unions, fellow journalists, each one of you can take many steps, many tasks, many tasks that, however simple, could lead to stopping the most dangerous famine the age has witnessed and the most dangerous genocide humanity has witnessed.

This is dictated to you by your conscience, above all else, your morals, above all else, your humanity, above all else. Certainly, your political and legal duties, each in his own position, also dictate that you do a lot.

Fellow journalists have a huge duty to perform for their colleagues. More than 240 colleagues, both male and female, were martyred, exterminated, killed, or targeted by direct fire, simply because they did their duty. Many, many of their families were scattered, torn apart, and killed. Some of them are still wounded, and some of them are still prisoners in Israeli prisons.

Therefore, with all the horrific and heartbreaking images coming from the Gaza Strip, you must do your duty. We expect a lot from you, a lot from your conscience, a lot from your morals, and we will continue to wait for you to carry out your duties with all humanity, all seriousness, and also with all professionalism.

May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
