Tell the government to be bold and back the BBC
THE NATIONAL Union of Journalists (NUJ) is encouraging members to respond to the UK governnment's consultation on the review of the BBC charter. Your deadline is Tuesday 10 March.
The charter review process is designed to inform the decision on the future of BBC funding - the licence fee. As the NUJ's response puts it, “a secure funding settlement with sustained licence fee increases will enable the BBC to deliver quality news provision and improved, pay, conditions and training for staff, further protecting journalists' right to report freely - without fear or interference - and thus the BBC’s independence.”
The government is also asking about BBC governance. The NUJ says: “To increase accountability and trust both internally and externally, workers must have a say on the BBC's most important oversight and decision-making body... the BBC board and its chair should be chosen by an arms-length body to protect the corporation from government interference and guarantee greater independence.”
Please send your tesponse in your own words, insp9red by this. You can complete it online via this link or email bbccharterreview@dcms.gov.uk.
