The impact of AI on journalists and journalism

Invitation

LONDON FREELANCE Branch of the National Union of Journalists invites members to a panel examining the impact of AI on journalism and journalists. It is on Monday 8 June from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in Committee Room 12, Houses of Parliament.

Journalism is a foundation-stone for democracy, and a fair society depends on the work of dedicated professionals, uncovering corruption and holding the powerful to account.

AI technology changes everything about how we understand truth and integrity; what’s real, what’s fake; the way we work and how we journalists earn our daily bread.

We report difficult stories, often at great personal cost to our health and wellbeing.

AI in its early incarnation has been trained on our words and pictures –for which we demand compensation and the law of copyright to apply.

The Association of Photographers found that members had lost 58% of their work to AI-generated images. A journalist’s income depends on our right to earn money from our work. Our industry is only sustainable if we can sustain ourselves by earning enough to work as professionals.

We, with other creative workers, have fought off government plans simply to give our work to AI corporations.

On 8 June we will explore the next stage in our response.

Our speakers:

  • John McDonnell MP Secretary of the NUJ Parliamentary Group
  • Laura Davison NUJ General Secretary
  • Kate Devlin Professor of Artificial Intelligence & Society; Chair-Director, Digital Futures Institute, King's College London
  • Isabelle Doran CEO Association of Photographers
  • Pennie Quinton Chair, NUJ London Freelance Branch
