Ways to make journalism pay

THE WAYS to make journalism pay Branch event on 10 October was by all accounts a huge success. Multi-prize-winning Sky News journalist Alex Crawford OBE managed to join our final session online immediately after a gruelling evacuation from Yemen.

Sam Taylor posted a report to the NUJ website on the day. The editors are working on a more complete report. Immediate feedback from participants included:

  • Lovely to meet so many of you at last - and what a great conference!
  • Thank you so so much. I had a wonderful day meeting lots of fabulous journalists.
  • It was a fantastic day, well worth the journey. Great to meet you all.
  • An interesting day. Meeting with some people I hadn't seen for a while was good too. “Q”, Alex Crawford and tips from the opening panel were my personal highlights.

Panel 1 on making money and keeping (the right amount of) it featured mentor, coach and travel writer Susan Grossman on securing assignments; accountant Eric Longley on managing income; editor Eleanor Mills on finding work and midlife pivots; and NUJ trainer Steve Mathieson on The Pitch & Deal and retaining clients.
