The National Union of Journalists

In the Music Room, Foreign Press Association
No. 11, Carlton House Terrace, London SW1
THE THIRD ANNIVERSARY
OF THE MURDER OF GYORGY GONGADZE,
OUR UKRAINIAN COLLEAGUE
Main speaker: MYROSLAVA GONGADZE, Gyorgy's widow
On 16 September 2000, Gyorgy Gongadze, editor of the
Ukrainska Pravda web site, disappeared. His headless
body was found in a ditch near Kyiv. Then, a bodyguard of
Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma released an audio
tape, on which the president and senior ministers could
apparently be heard conspiring to harm Gongadze. In the
three years since Gyorgy’s death, official investigations
have failed to take this tape into account. Recently (July
2003) a key witness died in mysterious circumstances.
The NUJ believes this case is a touchstone for media
freedom in Europe, and we call for an independent
international investigation in to it.
How to get there
From Charing Cross: turn onto the Strand and
walk to Trafalgar Square. Take the third road
which leads under Admiralty Arch and onto
The Mall. Walk for approx. 250 yards on the
right hand side until you come to The Duke of
York Steps (very large statue of the Duke of
York). Turn right at the top of the steps and
number 11 Carlton House Terrace is directly
on your right. [streetmap]
