Error 407: history has occurred

NUJNet was one of the first experiments in getting trade union members to organise online. It was launched waaay back when, in the days when the only people who had internet email addresses worked in Computer Science departments or the US military. That was 1992.

So it used the proprietary GeoNet email and bulletin board software. And much fun was had by few, trying to find email gateways to other email systems. And the bulletin boards never really reached a critical mass of subscribers.

It also offered, for a while, access to the FT Profile, Dialog and DataStar databases. Which led to the story about the editor paying £5 to get one of his own stories back, because that was much cheaper than spending half an hour in his piling system. And to him realising that he really ought to get half of that fee...
