Getting moving as a freelance
London Freelance Branch's own Humphrey Evans is running a day
seminar entitled Develop Your Freelance Capabilities, as part of the NUJ training
scheme. While Getting Started as a Freelancer is for those just beginning,
Develop Your Freelance Capabilities is a new course aimed at those who have
been freelance writers, editors or reporters in print journalism for some
time.
As Humphrey puts it, "you're thinking about how you can
continue to develop your capabilities. You realise it might be helpful to come and
spend a day talking with a tutor and other freelances about how you could
explore new ways of working, new areas in which to work, new approaches to
looking for work and generally how to go about revitalising and consolidating your
freelance life. The emphasis is on developing approaches to working in a way
that suits you and not about the nuts and bolts of freelancing as a
business."
Topics and exercises on the day will include:
- how you might consider different and effective ways of
working
- thoughts on moving into new areas of work - and
how you might acquire the skills to do so
- looking for the information you need to move forward
- coming up with streams of ideas that might impress
commissioning editors
- how you might go about practically implementing the ideas
you are coming up with drawing on the expertise of fellow freelances to help you
see how to work more effectively
The seminar is at Headland House on Tuesday October 3 2006, priced at
£55 for NUJ members and £85 for non-members. It is not
suitable for photographers or broadcasters. For further information, email
training@nuj.org.uk or visit www.nujtraining.org.uk.
