Press and Public Relations Branch of the NUJ invites you to an open meeting about the slave trade and slavery on 6 June

1807-2007 - Restitution Not Commemoration

• This year is the bicentenary of the British parliamentary abolition of the slave trade.
• In the mid eighteenth century Britain was one of the 'greatest' slave trading nations.
• In 1807 a bill was finally passed abolishing the trade in enslaved people in British colonies.
• Slavery itself was not at an end, it finally ceased throughout the Caribbean when full emancipation was granted in 1838.

A panel of speakers, led by Professor Gus John, will discuss this important and topical issue. Other panel members include NUJ members Lionel Morrison, chair of the NUJ black members council and Alex Pascal. To be followed by discussion.
