Future of BBC News Channel
IF THE BBC News Channel disappeared, it would leave Sky with a domestic monopoly in continuous UK television news.
The NUJ believes both the BBC News Channel and the BBC World News channel play important and different roles and therefore must be retained; the union has submitted ideas that could save millions of pounds across the newsroom by reducing waste and duplication, while safeguarding jobs and services.
The proposal goes before the BBC News executive board in July. If you care about news, national scrutiny and accountability, the NUJ encourages you sign the petition linked below and to encourage your MP to sign the Early Day Motion on the subject.
Update
Staff at BBC World News are planning a walkout as part of a 24-hour strike on Thursday 7 July - see here. Freelances: you may find yourself unavailable on this day. Freelances who suffer hardship as a result of being unavailable should contact the striking chapel.
