The Snoopers' Charter

PR & Communications Branch of the NUJ has organised a meeting on "The Snooper's Charter: secret intelligence and the rule of law".

The Investigatory Powers Bill now going through parliament would give the authorities the right to access everyone's web browsing history and hack into their phones. It is the world's first comprehensive legal framework for state surveillance. Is this a sensible approach to tackling crime and terrorism, or a licence for state intrusion?

Come and hear former GCHQ director Prof Sir David Omand and NUJ general secretary Michelle Stanistreet debate the rights and wrongs of the bill and its potential effects on public discourse and a free press.
