Coffee morning: Why ALCS matters to freelances
THE NEXT Branch coffee morning is on Friday 8 May at 10:00. We are pleased to welcome Pallavi Vadhia and Nushreen Rumjaun from the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS).
ALCS is a non-profit organisation dedicated to ensuring that writers receive the money they are rightfully owed for the secondary use of their work - such as photocopying, scanning, or digital copying. For freelance journalists and authors, this session is a vital opportunity to understand how to claim "secondary" income that often goes unnoticed.
Some reasons that ALCS matters to freelances:
- Collective rights management: They track down royalties from all over the world for the reuse of your articles, books, and scripts.
- Financial benefit: Many freelances are unaware they have earned "secondary" royalties. ALCS ensures this money reaches the creator rather than sitting in a centralised pot.
- Advocacy: ALCS campaigns for writers' rights and fair remuneration in a shifting digital landscape.
