New Ways to Make Journalism Pay - Part II

Conference - book now!

THE NUJ London Freelance Branch is hosting a one-day conference in central London on Saturday 17 November, designed to help freelances broaden what they're offering, find new markets, enhance their skills and become more profitable.

"New Ways to Make Journalism Pay II" builds on the success of the LFB's 2010 conference of the same name. It will give NUJ members and non-members invaluable insights from leading writers, photographers and commissioners about the way today's media have evolved, the new opportunities that have developed, and the techniques and tools that can be used to their advantage (despite it all!)

Sessions will cover:

  • Why The Media Needs Professional Freelances;
  • New Places To Sell Your Work;
  • Maximising Social Media;
  • Finding Clients Who Don't Know They Want You;
  • Breaking BRICs (the increasingly important Brazil, Russia, India and China markets);
  • Making It (In A Recession); and
  • Start-Ups Small And Big.

Confirmed speakers include Peter Kirwan (Guardian, Press Gazette and Wired media writer), LFB's own Mark Watts (editor Exaro online investigative agency), Una Murphy (freelance and co-founder and publisher of the Belfast community "paper" VIEWdigital), Imran Jina (Panorama and Despatches), Guy Smallman (international photographer), Alex Klaushofer (co-editor, co-author Help Yourself ), Christian Payne (photographer/videographer/blogger, aka Documentally), Huma Yusuf (freelance, new global markets), Max Glaskin (international b2b writer) and NUJ General Secretary Michelle Stanistreet.

Commenting on the conference, NUJ national freelance organiser John Toner said: "It is a pleasure and a privilege to be involved in this vital, imaginative event. Professional freelances are inventive and resourceful. This conference will serve as a showcase for their skills, which are essential for the wellbeing of the industry."

Tickets are £10 for members, £30 for non-members and include lunch, coffee/tea. You can buy tickets online by clicking on the "Buy Now" button below.

Payment can also be made by cheque payable to "NUJ" and posted to LFB New Ways Conference c/o Freelance Office, NUJ, 308-312 Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8DP. To pay by credit card without using Paypal please contact Pamela Morton on or 020 7843 3706.
