Anne Bolt Memorial Award

The Anne Bolt Memorial Award was a testament to the work of a union Member of Honour who was a prolific photographer - working internationally, with Salvador Dali and Eleanor Roosevelt among her portrait subjects - and a prime mover for the rights of photographers. Anne Bolt worked for years to get copyright onto the political agenda and was a key figure in the passing of the 1988 Copyright Act, which recognised photographers as creators for the first time in UK law.

The competition was open to photojournalists (including students) who were under 25 on 31 March 2000.

Entrants were asked to provide a portfolio of five photographs, which may be linked. The theme for the 2000 award was "Arrivals and Departures"

Up to three prizes were considered, of £700, £500 and £200.

The judges were:

• Colin Jacobson, senior research fellow at Cardiff University;
• Eamonn McCabe, picture editor of the Guardian; and
• the Observer's Jane Bown
