George Viner Memorial Fund Trust

Sponsoring Black Students in the Media

George Viner was the Union's Education and Training Officer from 1961 until 1976 and had the distinction of establishing the National Council for the Training of Journalists. Its certificate remains the definitive qualification for newspaper journalists. Always active in the NUJ following his election to membership in 1932 at the age of 20 years, George was for many years a delegate to ADM and a member of the National Executive Council. Much of his long and distinguished career as a journalist, before joining the Union's full-time staff, was spent in South Wales. There he also developed his interest in education through work with the Workers Educational Association and other bodies with like aims.

George died in April 1983 aged 70 years. His widow Nancy agreed to the use of his name in the Fund title in the belief that he would have supported its aims wholeheartedly. His daughter Carole maintains the family involvement by being a Fund trustee.
