Remembering journalists killed in the Israel-Gaza war

Colleagues mourn journalists Saeed Al-Taweel and Muhammad Sobh, killed in Gaza on 10 October 2024
LONDON FREELANCE Branch of the National Union of Journalists mourns all journalists killed in the Israel-Gaza conflict.
On 26 August 2025 reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and reports from the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS), showed that at least 241 journalists and media workers - and possibly 344 - were among those killed on 7 October 2023 and since. (Toward the end of August 2025 the IFJ revised its list and confirmed the killing of more than two dozen journalists who we had listed provisionally.)
We give the journalists' names that we have below.
Some died when their homes were attacked; some were directly targeted while working as journalists. (See note.)

Not just journalists...
On 11 August 2025, following the killing of four of its staff and two freelances, Al Jazeera published the names of 269 Palestinian, 2 Israeli and 3 Lebanese journalists who it said had been killed/ We shall be cross-checking.
Of the total killings, at least 62,686 had been killed in Gaza and more than 900 in the occupied West Bank; and about 1139 Israeli citizens. (Al Jazeera last updated its new tracker on 29 June 2025.) Health authorities recorded 217 killed due to starvation, including 100 children.
Nearly 4000 were killed in Lebanon between mid-September and early December 2024, Sky News reported. We are not sure that anyone knows the death toll in Israeli attacks on Syria and Yemen, or in US and UK airstrikes on Houthi forces in Yemen.
A Letter to the Lancet published on 5 July 2024 points out that in recent conflicts, "indirect deaths... from causes such as reproductive, communicable, and non-communicable diseases... range from three to 15 times the number of direct deaths". It concludes that "applying a conservative estimate of four indirect deaths per one direct death to the 37,396 deaths then reported, it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186,000 or even more deaths could be attributable to the current conflict in Gaza"
On 8 May 2025 the Economist published a similar analysis giving a low estimate of 77,000 killed and a high of 109,000.
On 21 August 2025 972 magazine published Israeli army database suggests at least 83% of Gaza dead were civilians and the Guardian Revealed: Israeli military’s own data indicates civilian death rate of 83% in Gaza war. How many of the journalists killed are listed in the leaked database as "operatives" is an interesting and currently open question.

On 27 March 2024 Dutch newspaper NRC ran the names of 103 journalists killed in and around Gaza, with biographies where available
The IFJ and PJS condemn all the killings of journalists and the continued attacks on our colleagues and call for an immediate investigation into their deaths. IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger has said: "Media workers in areas of armed conflict must be treated and protected as civilians and allowed to perform their work without interference. The IFJ calls on all combatants in this conflict to do their utmost to safeguard journalists and media professionals."
London Freelance Branch Committee joins in the condemnation and the call for investigations. IFJ updates are at www.ifj.org/israel-hamas-war.
Also in our thoughts are injured and imprisoned journalists. The CPJ now lists those who it confirms to have been injured as journalists in Gaza, and those missing.
CPJ also lists Arrests of Palestinian journalists since start of Israel-Gaza war - its database is well behind this.

Doubt and sudden certainty
Then there is the case of Abdallah Al-Jamal, killed during a raid on 8 June 2024 that rescued four hostages held by Hamas. The New York Post was among the outlets to report immediately that he was a journalist and that three hostages had been held in his home; others have claimed that they were held in a different apartment in the block.
Al Jazeera said in a statement: "Abdullah Al-Jamal has never worked with the network, but had contributed to an op-ed in 2019. The network also stresses that these allegations are a continuation of the process of slander and misinformation aimed at harming Al Jazeera’s reputation, professionalism, and independence. It calls for accuracy before publishing any of these allegations." He was widely reported to be working as a press officer for the Hamas administration of Gaza. A publication called the Palestine Chronicle, produced in Olympia, Washington State, US, claimed him as its correspondent.
Of course some took the story as evidence that every journalist - indeed every man, woman and child - killed in Gaza deserved to die. As late as 22 June 2024 the Daily Telegraph used it to attack the BBC.
Families are being killed
It is impossible to keep track of the number of journalists who have lost some - or all - of their families to action of the state of Israel. To give some examples among many:
On 25 October 2023 two Palestinian journalists learned that their families had been killed - in what many believe were targeted attacks. These came after US Secretary of State Tony Blinken reportedly told the Prime Minister of Qatar "turn down the volume" of reporting by Al Jazeera.
Middle East Eye reports that Muhammad Al-Farra received the news that his wife and children had killed by an Israeli air strike on the city of Khan Younis, in the south of Gaza, while he was covering a protest in the West Bank city of Al-Birah.
Al Jazeera reports that family of the bureau chief of Al Jazeera Arabic, Wael Al-Dahdouh, were killed in an Israeli air raid. He was live on air when he learned that his wife, son, daughter and grandson were dead.
Wael Al-Dahdouh returned to work the next day.

Wael's remaining son, Hamza, also a journalist, was killed in an Israeli attack on the car he was travelling in with two other journalists on 7 January 2024.
On 5 November 2023 France24 reported that a car following that of journalist Samir Ayoub was targeted by Israeli armed forces in southern Lebanon, injuring him and killing his sister and her three grandchildren.
On 27 November 2023 it was reported that as writer Mosab Abu Toha (@mosababutoha) was trying to move south from northern Gaza he was pulled away from his family at an Israeli "filtering" checkpoint and bussed into the Naqab desert for interrogations. "His well-connected editors at the @nytimes, @newyorker etc were able to get the IDF to free him." He later Tweeted: "I'm safe but still have pain in nose and teeth after being beaten by Israeli army. I gave them all my family's passports, including my American son's but they didn't return anything. Also my clothes & my children's were taken and not returned to me. No wallet, money, credit cards."
On 11 December 2023 the father of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif was killed in an Israeli attack on his home in the Jabalia refugee camp in Northern Gaza. The CPJ and the IFJ noted that Anas reported receiving threats from Israeli military officers by phone. The CPJ noted with alarm a "pattern of journalists in Gaza reporting receiving threats, and subsequently, their family members being killed". Anas himself was killed on 10 August 2025.
On 27 November 2023 Mohammed Balousha reported on Al Mashhad TV that four premature babies had died alone in their incubators because they had to be left behind at al-Nasr Children's Hospital after Israel forced the staff to evacuate and reneged on a promise to allow ambulances through. On 16 December 2023 Balousha was shot in the thigh while reporting Gaza's communications blackout. He later told the Washington Post: "I was wearing everything to prove that I was a journalist, but they deliberately targeted me, and now I am struggling to get the treatment necessary to preserve my life". Ambulances were prevented from reaching him. It took him six hours to climb up a flight of stairs to reach a trauma kit, reportedly supplied by the IFJ Safety Fund. As far as we know he has still not managed to get the treatment he needs for the double fracture in his thigh.
On 8 January 2024 Ahmed Al Batta's mother, sisters and their children were killed in an Israeli strike in Khan Yunis, in the south of Gaza.
There are too many cases of journalists being injured and journalists' families being killed to keep up. On 24 February 2024 freelance photojournalist Abdullah Al-Hajj was seriously injured by an Israeli drone while filming scenes of destruction in Al-Shati camp in northern Gaza. It was reported that both his legs had to be amputated. He was struck less than a week after the iconic image below was widely distributed.

‘Because of their work’
Reporters sans frontières attracted opprobrium for headlining on 14 December 2023 a statement that 13 journalists had been killed in Gaza "because of their work" up to 1 December. The organisation did go on to note that the total "rises to 56 if we include all journalists killed in the Gaza Strip" - but when people do not read beyond headlines, still less dissect the footnote on methodology... and when we are unlikely ever to discover how many of the journalists' homes and families were deliberately targeted, because that would involve discussing military secrets about the effectiveness and prevalence of so-called "precision" weapons... this is sub-optimal.

Journalists’ service: Without fear or favour
An annual service to commemorate all journalists, photographers, camera-crew, sound-crew and support staff who have died on the frontline, was held at St Bride's Church, Fleet Street, on Tuesday 7 November 2023. The Freelance contribution to the service was the number 53 - the total we then knew of - and Culture Minister John Whittingdale mentioned the number in an address that focused on the government's National Action Plan for the Safety of Journalists. We continue to assist the Journalists' Church with updating the list of the fallen - of all faiths and none - displayed on the journalists' altar.
The Palestinian Authority - controlled by the Fatah party and located in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank - in December 2023 issued photographs of 75 journalists that it says had been killed in Gaza. See this 16 MB image
The PJS reported in November 2023 that at least 50 media organisations' headquarters in Gaza have been destroyed, including those of Al-Jazeera, the French agency AFP, and dozens of local radio stations, channels, and agencies.
Reporting is of course hindered by the intermittent cutting of all internet and cellphone communication from Gaza, starting on 27 October 2023.
In the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories - the West Bank and Jerusalem - more than 50 journalists have been detained, preventing crews from working. The PJS reports physical assaults including beatings, and confiscation and destruction of journalists' equipment.
Shireen Abu Akleh was shot and killed by Israeli troops while reporting for Al Jazeera in Jenin - in the occupied West Bank - on 11 May 2022. Branch member Pennie Quinton organised a memorial service and the order of service named 46 journalists killed covering the Israel-Palestine conflict between 2000 and May 2022.
A report dated 5 September 2023 by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory prepared in accordance with Human Rights Council resolution S-30/1 concludes that "the Israeli security forces used lethal force without justification under international human rights law and intentionally or recklessly violated the right to life of Shireen Abu Akleh." The IFJ continues to call for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate.
On 27 October 2023 the shrine erected where Shireen was killed was bulldozed at 3am.
On 4 January 2024 Shatha Hanaysha wrote: "Today, the Israeli forces directly fired at me and my colleagues while we were covering a raid near Jenin [in the north of the West Bank]. The experience of running for my life, dodging bullets alongside my colleagues, brought me back to 11 May. I remembered Sherin Abu Akleh [who was shot on that day in 2022]. I recalled our attempt to escape."
On 19 October 2023 the International Federation of Journalists issued an appeal to journalists everywhere to respect the professional principles of the Global Ethics Charter, notably that "the notion of urgency or immediacy in the dissemination of information shall not take precedence over the verification of facts and sources". It says: "Unverified information, unsourced videos and images from social networks: the war between Hamas and Israel is also a war of communication... the professional principles of journalists must be absolutely respected. The duty is to provide information in the public interest."
As a sub-editor, our sympathy lies with whoever it was at the UN Human Rights Office who passed a press release on 14 December 2023 stating that Mustafa Ayyash, of Gaza Now, had been killed. As the correction that the Office issued in April 2024 states, it was his cousin, photographer Mohamed Mouin Ayyash, who was killed, as we correctly reported at the time. That didn't stop the usual suspects claiming that every report is a lie - when Mustafa Ayyash was raided in Austria on 27 March 2024 on suspicion of funding Hamas.
5 August 2025
We record the saddest sub-editing task of the year so far: ensuring that every date given specifies the year, because this damn thing has been going on so bloody long. In the process we removed the entry for Muhammad Abu Rizk, a photographer for the "News" agency, reported killed in October 2023 but no longer listed anywhere else that we can find.

Uncertain casualties
All figures are approximate and it will be years before we get a definitive account - if there are still historians. Many sources, including the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA OPT) initially gave the number of Israeli citizens killed on 7 October 2023 as 1400. Unlike standard OCHA practice this number included some non-civilians.
As an illustration of the uncertainty only, Wikipedia in November 2023 listed 308 Israel Defence Force (IDF) soldiers, 10 Shin Bet (internal security service) agents and 58 police officers (current claim here). How many of the total were killed by the IDF alongside their attackers is an open question. How many of those killed in Gaza were Israeli hostages is unclear, as is the number that were paramilitaries. Probably the 1500 paramilitaries reported as killed inside Israel on 7 October 2023 are not included in any other figure.
On 10 November 2023 Israel's Foreign Ministry revised the death toll in the 7 October Hamas attack down to 1200. On 15 December 2023 it was further revised to 1139.
The accusation has frequently been thrown at the Gaza health authority that because it is "Hamas-controlled" its figures must be inflated. In contrast, on 4 November 2023 YNet news reported (in Hebrew): "senior security official: 20,000 were killed in the Gaza Strip, most of them terrorists" - at a time when the Gazan count was 9770.
