Safety and security: covering far-right demonstrations
WITH THE planned far-right demonstration on 29 August approaching, we thought it would be useful to have a friendly 90-minute briefing and experience-sharing session for members who may be covering demonstrations or other potentially challenging situations. So we are holding one on Friday 28 August from 11:00.
This is not a formal training session. Instead, we will share practical experiences, tips and lessons learned from covering demonstrations, and give members the opportunity to ask questions and share their own experiences.
We will touch on:
- Staying safe during demonstrations and unrest – practical ways of assessing situations and reducing risks.
- Where to position yourself and how to film safely while continuing to report effectively.
- Personal safety and security – useful precautions to consider before, during and after a demonstration.
- Sharing experiences – what has worked for you, what you have learned from previous assignments, and any situations you think other freelancers could benefit from hearing about.
- Finding opportunities for this type of coverage – where freelance journalists can pitch and sell reporting from demonstrations and breaking-news situations.
So: bring your coffee, bring your questions, and bring your experiences!
The aim is simply to have an informal and useful conversation among freelancers before the 29 August demonstration.
